PARKHILL– The YMCA of Southwestern Ontario is set to end its operations in the town of Parkhill after 14 years of service at the North Middlesex arena’s fitness centre. This decision marks an important change for the local community, as the YMCA has been a key part of the town’s health and wellness landscape.
North Middlesex Council recently chose Damen Optimal Health over the YMCA and other bidders in a Request for Proposals (RFP) process. As a result, Damen Optimal Health will begin a five-year term operating the fitness centre starting September 1, 2024.
According to Mayor Brian Ropp, the fitness centre will continue to operate much as it did under the YMCA, with the same rates and programs in place. However, there will be some changes, particularly regarding the external programs that the YMCA previously offered, which Damen Optimal Health will not manage. Ropp assured that the municipality plans not only to preserve these external programs but also to expand them to better serve the community. He emphasized that the new operator is seen as the best option for ensuring the continued success and improvement of the facility.
While the fitness services will largely remain the same, the transition has critical implications for the YMCA staff currently employed at the North Middlesex arena. A representative from the YMCA noted that while some employees will be reassigned to other locations within the organization, most of the 20 part-time workers will be laid off when the contract ends at the end of August. This has raised concerns among staff and community members, as the YMCA has been a long-standing employer and community partner in Parkhill.
Despite the upcoming changes, the YMCA confirmed that its summer day camp programs will continue as planned. Additionally, members who wish to continue their fitness journey with the YMCA are encouraged to visit the Strathroy and Lambton Shores branches, which are both within a reasonable driving distance from Parkhill.
The departure of the YMCA from North Middlesex is a significant moment for the community, as the organization has played a vital role in promoting health and wellness in the area. For many residents, the YMCA has been more than just a fitness centre; it has served as a place for community, connection, and personal growth. The impact of its departure will likely be felt by many, particularly those who have relied on its programs and services for years.
