TRAVEL - Like many in the neighbourhood, I have been outside hanging icicles and setting up angels, deer, and moose. Across the street, my neighbour has eclipsed my work in time, money, and display, as witnessed by many who stop and stare. Why do these colourful displays we festoon our homes with this time of year bring out such emotions in us?
Displaying Christmas lights not only celebrates the holiday but also evokes positive emotions of hope and joy. Some say the tradition began with candles on Christmas trees in 17th-century Germany, representing Jesus as the light of the world, and evolved into the electric lights we experience today. Historically, lights brightened the darkest days of winter and were used to welcome travelers.
In past times, Christians would place lit candles in their windows to welcome other Christians to visit and worship. Today, electric lights can offer a symbol of hope to travelers.
According to some experts, an emotional response can be had as people view the bright lights. They can stimulate the brain’s reward center, releasing dopamine and improving mood. As well, these colourful displays help create a festive and celebratory atmosphere for the holiday season.
For some, like the Griswold Ilderton Christmas Display in Ilderton, displays can help others financially as well. People drive from miles around to view the thousands of lights at the Vanleeuwen home. Last year they raised over $20,000+ for Childcan!
If you wish to drive to some magnificent displays, Magic Lights at Fanshawe Conservation Park offers a drive-through event. Also, St. Marys features a nice display evening, at Milt Dunnell Field, known locally as “The Flats”. Further afield, Bingemans in Kitchener and the town of Simcoe both feature a dazzling display that’s sure to please.
In St. Thomas, the Elgin County Railway Museum offers “over 300 beautifully decorated Christmas trees (each with a separate theme), plus festive displays, and magical holiday traditions”. You can Google these to find their location.
Displaying lights is a cherished tradition and a popular way to decorate homes, businesses, and communities for Christmas, providing joy within that community. So, when you are setting up your Christmas decor remember the joy garnered by others as they drive or walk by your home.
Wherever you go, chances are you will see impressive displays. Consider it a Christmas gift from the homeowners to you.
