ILDERTON – Residents filled the streets and fairgrounds on Saturday, July 11, as Ilderton celebrated its 150th anniversary with a day that honoured the community’s past while looking ahead to its future.
The festivities opened with a parade featuring antique tractors, classic vehicles, local organizations and community floats before moving to the official opening ceremonies. Inside the arena, visitors explored historical displays presented by local churches, service clubs, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Tri-County Heritage Club, the Ilderton Agricultural Society, the Middlesex Centre Archives, and other organizations that have helped shape the village over generations.
Mayor Aina DeViet thanked the many volunteers and partners behind the celebration, noting that the organizing committee had spent “countless hours planning, coordinating, checking, and double-checking” to create a weekend with “something for absolutely everyone.” She also recognized the partnerships that helped make the event possible, saying the collaboration between the Ilderton Agricultural Society and the Tri-County Heritage Club showed “what is possible when community comes together.”.
Committee chair Kristen Sybers said the anniversary was about much more than marking 150 years.
“Today is more than marking a milestone,” she said. “It’s about honouring people, families, businesses, farmers, volunteers, and our community leaders who helped build Ilderton into the vibrant place we call home.” She encouraged residents to enjoy the exhibits inside the arena and leave with “a renewed sense of pride in Ilderton.”
MPP Steve Pinsonneault congratulated organizers and residents, describing the anniversary as “a milestone” built by “strong dedicated families throughout the generations” and recognizing the years of preparation required to stage such an event. MP Lianne Rood echoed those sentiments, saying Ilderton has maintained its small-town character while continuing to celebrate its agricultural roots and community spirit.
The morning also included a surprise legacy announcement. Longtime resident Glenn Powell donated a total of $1 million to 50 community organizations in Ilderton and the surrounding area, with each group receiving $20,000 to support its programs. The donation was presented following the opening ceremonies and was welcomed as an investment that will benefit local organizations and residents for years to come.
