LUCAN – Rubber ducks recently took over the Lucan Library, dressed as everything from movie characters to tiny spa-goers.
The library’s Rubber Duck Cosplay program drew a strong response from the community, with 62 rubber ducks distributed to participants. The ducks that returned came back with some very creative new looks. “We had a huge response for the Rubber Duck Cosplay program,” said Lucan Library Supervisor Leigh Robinson. “The participants’ level of creativity far exceeded anything we could have hoped for.”
The finished ducks were displayed at the library, where visitors could vote for their favourites. More than 200 votes were cast.
Two ducks came out on top: No. 27, “Spa Day,” and No. 29, “Anxiety,” inspired by the Inside Out character. The winners received gift certificates to a local ice cream store in Lucan. “We would like to thank all of the participants for the program for sharing their incredible talents and humour with the Lucan Library staff and patrons,” Robinson said.
Some of the ducks were still hanging around the library after the contest. Nine had yet to be picked up, including Harry Potter, Spider-Man, Minnie Mouse and Stitch.
The ducks may be leaving, but there will be plenty happening at the library this fall.
Regular programs such as Storytime, Lego My Library, Dog Tales, Movie Matinee, Cups and Conversation and others are back, along with several new activities for both children and adults.
Several of the fall programs also give people a chance to get creative. Adults can try portrait drawing or make their own tiny works of art through the Make it Miniature program. In October, Pumpkin Puzzle Art will turn colourful puzzle pieces into art instead of asking participants to put them back together.
There are also a few ways to give old things a second life. At the end of September, families can donate clean, gently used costumes and then return October 3 to choose a free new-to-them costume. A jigsaw puzzle swap is also planned for later in October.
For younger visitors, one of the more unusual nights will put the stuffed animals to work. During Stuffies Work the Night Shift on October 22, children can leave a favourite stuffed animal at the library after Storytime. The toys will spend the night as “Library Branch Assistants,” and their owners will later receive an album showing what happened during their first shift.
October will also include Storytime with Mayor Cathy Burghardt-Jesson, Prime Time Bingo and a PA Day filled with Halloween activities, including a scavenger hunt, origami and Storytime.
