TRAVEL - The motto states it, “It’s not just a beer, it’s a story!” Go in for a beer, come away with the tale that put Lucan on the map many years ago. Their brew “comes with one of the most infamous stories of Canada’s early frontier”.
Owner Alexander Douglas is usually on tap to serve and provide genial conversation as he offers samples of his various beers. Calling the Donnelly family story, “both gripping and tragic”, the saga surrounds a feud that finally led to murder.
“The Black Donnellys and The Biddulph Horror”, as it’s called here, is a story of violence and vengeance on Canada’s frontier. It has become a Canadian legend, known across the country inspiring books, plays, and a television show.
While this was a new world for these settlers, many of the conflicts from the old world remained. Poor and searching for new opportunities, James and Johannah Donnelly arrived in Canada with their young son, James, between 1842 and 1846. A second son, Will was born, and the family moved to Roman Line in what was then Biddulph Township.
The family farmed and grew to seven sons and one daughter. Being squatters, the original owner, Patrick Farrell, came to possess the property. A judge eventually ordered that the Donnellys could keep the land they had cleared. As both sides didn’t agree to the decision, the feud between the Donnellys and Farrell, quickly grew until Farrell was killed.
Barns and homes burned, animals killed, were all charges locals had against the family, known to be fighters and violent. Politics, following them from Ireland, may also have played a part in the feuding. The family ran a successful stagecoach line which also brought trouble.
The story is a mix of history and legend which became a part of Lucan Biddulph. So much so a museum was created on Lucan’s Main Street. The Black Donnelly’s Brewing Company tell some of the story and one can read more on the walls while sipping beer of enjoying some of their food.
Located on Mitchell Line, just south of Whalen Line, it’s a short drive to have a relaxing visit and learn some local lore.
