LUCAN – Seventeen-year-old Ben Oliver had planned to start college this fall and work toward university next year. Instead, he is facing months of cancer treatment, with family, friends, and the community helping him along the way.
His father, Mike Oliver, said treatment is still in its early stages, but Ben is facing it with quiet strength and determination. “He continues to amaze us with his resilience and his ability to take everything in stride,” his father said.
An online fundraiser had collected $30,360 toward a $35,000 goal through 199 donations as of October 10. The money will help his family cover travel, accommodation, meals and other expenses while they accompany him for care.
According to the GoFundMe page, Ben underwent emergency brain surgery before tests confirmed a cancerous tumour called pure germinoma. Mike Oliver said in a September update that treatment was expected to last about six months, beginning with chemotherapy followed by radiation.
Mike has since shared that Ben’s first treatment was complete and had gone as well as expected. Rest and follow-up appointments were next.
The fundraising page outlines plans for chemotherapy at SickKids in Toronto, followed by radiation expected to involve travel to the United States for more targeted treatment. Mike wrote that Ben’s medical team was optimistic about his recovery.
For the family, the help they have received goes well beyond donations. “It has allowed us to focus our energy on what matters most, Ben and his recovery,” Mike said. “Beyond the financial support, the messages, kindness, and encouragement have really lifted our spirits.”
Ben lives in Lucan and enjoys soccer, video games and comedy. He also loves his job at the arena, where he needs time away during treatment. At home, he is a big brother to nine-year-old Ruby and has a dog named Max.
Support has extended beyond online donations. The family attended a Lucan Irish Six hockey game, and Mike later thanked the team for its generosity and an exciting evening. The winner of the 50/50 draw also donated their winnings to Ben.
A “Bet on Ben” shirt campaign offered another way to help. Fundraiser organizer Adam Hedden thanked London Sports Excellence for providing time, resources and an online platform, with proceeds from the shirts going directly to the family.
Hedden organized the GoFundMe campaign on Mike’s behalf. Readers can find it by searching “Bet on Ben: Supporting His Fight Against Brain Cancer” on the fundraising website.
