TRAVEL - Looking for a short travel sprint for an afternoon—less than 200 kilometers—why not try Grand Bend? There is plenty to do there and an afternoon can pass by quickly. If you plan ahead, the day will provide fun, entertainment and food.
We drove north from London to Parkhill, home of the successful North Middlesex Stars hockey team. Best to take highway 81 as the bridge on Nairn Road is closed for construction. Parkhill offers some shopping, gas and eateries, but save your appetite for further up the road. Stop at the lookout just north of Parkhill and view the ponds by the dam. Can you say, “Picnic!”
North on 81, Grand Bend’s Motorplex is a going concern in the summer if you enjoy the sounds of engines and the smell of gas, oil and burning rubber. Want a quieter space? Try the Dark Horse winery and taste some wines while being educated on the process of winemaking. Or enjoy a glass of wine with a charcuterie board. Wine bottles and apparel can also be purchased. You can also take time for lunch or supper in the Danu Cellers on the lower level.
The Huron County Playhouse is next door, allowing for a longer excursion including a play and food. Signs for both can be viewed before you reach Grand Bend’s business section. Making reservations for these two will provide a wonderful afternoon or evening’s experience.
Lake Huron offers a beach area and conservation park in Grand Bend. Plus, shopping, shopping, shopping.
Driving down highway 21, Westland Nursery is a favourite with many. Let the friendly and helpful staff help you find just the right thing for your garden or quiet area.
Kettle and Stoney Point gas, just along 21, is always a less expensive place to fuel up.
This is a trip that can consume two or three hours or an entire day, depending on what you choose to do. But it will not disappoint.
