MIDDLESEX CENTRE - Kids in Middlesex Centre are really getting into the swing of things, plus the slides, climbers, and more thanks to new playgrounds in Ilderton and Komoka. Official openings and ribbon cuttings took place at Meadowcreek Park in Ilderton on May 29th, and at Komoka Park beside the Komoka Community Centre on June 2nd.
The two playgrounds complete renew als that have been part of a municipal master plan that began in 2018 with new playgrounds in Arva and Delaware. Because of the high cost of the projects, DeViet says the installation of new playgrounds was staggered in time across communities in Middlesex Centre.
The new playgrounds were designed not only with fun in mind, but inclusivity and accessibility. Features include wider stairs on the climbing structures and ground-level play elements that can be accessed by wheelchair.
Meadowcreek Park was funded with a $150,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. “These are very expensive structures,” said DeViet. “It’s a team effort, and a little help from the government is always appreciated,” added the Mayor.
Core funding for the Komoka playground was included in the municipal budget with a $60,000 contribution from the Optimist Club of Komoka-Kilworth.
As well as promoting physical activity for kids, DeViet says playgrounds are important gathering places for families. “When people come out with their kids, they get to know each other, then they know about other things that are going on. It’s the weaving of a social fabric,” said DeViet.
