TRAVEL - For this adventure we traveled to Cambridge, Ontario, for a quick experience with a trail, ale and Sail. Just over an hour east on highway 401, the time spent can range from six hours to all day—your choice.
Our first stop was for breakfast at Toasters Diner. It’s a busy spot to have breakfast and a recommended place to start your day. Service was quick and friendly and the food great.
Full of eggs and bacon, a walk was in order. We went to the Canadian General-Tower Trailhead is at 210 Water Street South where you can walk in either direction along the Grand River. The trail follows the old roadbed of the Lake Erie and Northern Railway travelling 18 kilometers in either direction through forest and overlooking the Grand River at times.
Hot and tired, you might want to experience a brewery or winery. There are several in the area. A cold one is good right about now. Or if this isn’t to your liking, there are outlets on either side of the 401, off 24. Big box, clothing, and of course, eateries are rampant here. Shop till you drop is the call there.
My first visit to Sail was an eye opener. Two floors and many square feet of all things outdoors can be found, and bought, in the store. Tents, hunting and fishing apparel and paraphernalia, can be found. If you have a yen to camp, fish or hunt—or do anything outdoors—I guarantee you will find it all in this shop.
Back west to London, our trip was about 7 hours, but with the day vanishing rapidly, we easily could have spent more time.
