STRATHROY-CARADOC - At the July 2 council meeting, important discussions were held regarding the indoor air quality (IAQ) at local fire stations. Council reviewed a detailed report on the progress and future recommendations for improving air quality at Stations 2 and 3, presented by Robert Lilbourne, Director of Community Services.
Director Lilbourne highlighted the substantial improvements in air quality since the initial report in May 2024. These improvements were primarily in the reduction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in both the apparatus bays and administrative areas of the stations. He recommended further steps, including the installation of exhaust fans with timers at Station 2 to run in 30-minute intervals, enhancing air circulation.
A significant part of the discussion centered on the need for additional facilities, such as showers at Station 2 and personal washers and dryers at both Stations 2 and 3. Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Beasley explained that these facilities are essential for maintaining the health and hygiene of firefighters. Firefighters often get contaminated with harmful chemicals during their duties, and immediate access to showers and laundry facilities would help them clean up promptly, reducing the risk of bringing contaminants home.
Councillor Greg Willsie raised concerns about the budget, asking where the funds for these installations would come from. Bill Dakin, Treasurer, indicated that while the costs for installing exhaust fans might fall under building maintenance, the full extent of the renovations and their funding would need to be assessed once formal quotations were obtained.
Deputy Mayor Mike McGuire questioned the practicality of having personal laundry facilities on-site, suggesting that outsourcing laundry services might be a more efficient solution. He also expressed concerns about the functionality of installing washers and dryers at Station 3, which has a holding tank, potentially complicating waste management.
Despite these concerns, council recognized the importance of enhancing firefighter facilities and unanimously approved motions to proceed with obtaining formal quotations for the installation of the recommended exhaust fans, showers, and washers and dryers. However, they also requested additional information on alternative laundry options to ensure the most practical and costeffective solutions are implemented.
