The Middlesex Centre Archives (MCA) is pleased to offer its second Cemetery Bus Tour. Join MCA’s archivist Krista Taylor, three knowledgeable tour guides and some history buffs as they step outside the Archives and tour three local cemeteries. The bus tour will take place on Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for MCA members and $30 for non-members.
“Last year was the first time the Archives hosted a bus tour, visiting three historic cemeteries. Before we reached our third cemetery, attendees were hoping we’d offer this event again,” said Krista Taylor, MCA Archivist.
Attendees will visit three cemeteries in the municipality, one for each of the former townships. Starting in Delaware participants will learn about the history of each cemetery, as well as some of the notorious and infamous characters who may be below their feet. Which cemeteries will be visited – well, that’s part of the surprise! “Trust me, we’ve chosen three great sites to visit, that will allow attendees to learn more about their community. And each site will have a historian guide who will be there to provide an introduction and answer any questions.”
Why a cemetery tour? “Because people are curious, especially in October as they approach Halloween. Others, they’re interested in the art on the stones and most love to learn about their community. The potential of seeing the fall colours across the municipality is also a bonus.” says Ms. Taylor.
“Last year,” Ms. Taylor explains, “MCA provided a pamphlet to all attendees to help guide them in the cemeteries to better understand the symbolism found on gravestones. These stones are a lasting monument to those they commemorate, and the symbolism may provide further insight into who they may have been in life. Today, we don’t approach death and burial the same way. More people are opting for cremation and spreading of ashes, gravestones are going to become rarer as generations age. But symbolism is still important to those who are choosing to erect stones. From engraved images of the family farm to their tractor brand of choice, to a favourite cookie recipe, stones still provide insight into the people they represent.”
The tour begins at 10 am in Delaware. “Each cemetery is different. From denominational to union or community cemeteries, each has its own characteristics. The cemeteries we’ll visit this year will make each participant a bit more knowledgeable about their community. They’ll be able share with others a bit of trivia the next time they drive past that cemetery,” said Ms. Taylor.
Registration and payment is required by September 27 to confirm your space. The cost includes bus transportation and tour guides for each location. All attendees need to bring a bagged lunch. More details about the day will be shared with participants closer to the date.
