WARDSVILLE – On Saturday, September 7th, despite the chilly weather, residents from Wardsville and surrounding areas of Southwest Middlesex gathered to celebrate the third annual Wardsville Block Party.
The event, organized by the Your Wardsville Community Association, brought people together to celebrate the official grand opening of the new accessible and inclusive playground at Little Kin Park.
Denise Corneil, a key member of Your Wardsville and a resident of Wardsville, shared her thoughts on the event: “This is our third annual Block Party. We are trying to build community spirit. We are a small association of about a dozen people, and we try to do a few events a year for the community. Little Kin Park is the central gathering spot for Wardsville, and with this new playground, we hope to see it become a hub of activity for years to come.”
The event began with a warm welcome by Corneil, followed by a special blessing led by Reverend Deb Dolbear Van Bilsen of St. John’s Presbyterian Church. Reverend Deb guided the community through a moment of reflection, offering prayers of gratitude for the new playground and the community’s efforts. She also acknowledged the historical significance of Little Kin Park, which was once the site of St. James Anglican Church and its cemetery.
After the blessing, the crowd participated in the “Float for Hope” Bubble Celebration, a symbolic and joyful activity that filled the air with bubbles, representing the community’s collective hopes and dreams. The children, equipped with bubble wands, joined Mayor Allan Mayhew in this heartwarming display of unity.
Mayor Mayhew expressed his pride in the new playground, calling it a testament to the community’s commitment to children and families. “No child should be without play as part of growing up. This playground is free and accessible, and it will be here for years to come, ensuring our children have a safe place to grow and play,” said Mayhew.
The Block Party continued with lively performances by the local band Easy Mark, games for kids, delicious food provided by the Glencoe District Lions Club, and a strong sense of unity. The community looks forward to future events like this one, celebrating the spirit of Wardsville and the positive impact of Little Kin Park on its residents.
