AILSA CRAIG - On September 28, the Schlegel family celebrated an incredible milestone—60 years of success in the farming industry—with a grand event held at Shady Pines Campgrounds. The evening began with a lively car show, followed by a dinner and a heartwarming program featuring speeches that highlighted the journey and legacy of the Schlegel family.
The Schlegel farming enterprise was founded 60 years ago by Wilfred Schlegel and has since been continued by his sons, Ron and Ernie. Today, under the leadership of Jamie, Rob, and Brad Schlegel, the family business has grown tremendously, operating six farms across Southern Ontario and producing approximately 11 million kilograms of turkey meat annually.
General Manager Bob McCauley, who has been with the company for nearly 24 years, spoke about the company’s success and the collaborative spirit that has driven its growth. “I have been fortunate to work with incredible people, including my son Wayne and my wife Karen, who handle logistics and make my job easier. Our farm managers focus on bird health and day-to-day farm activities, which are key to our success,” he said, highlighting the strong team behind the Schlegel family.
Lisa Stam, the company’s controller, shared more details about the anniversary event, which was attended by approximately 320 guests. The invitees included current and former employees, suppliers, feed companies, and even truck drivers. “We wanted to thank everyone involved, not just the corporations, but the individuals—the drivers, loaders, and delivery truck drivers. It was important to us that everyone who played a role in building this organization was recognized,” Stam explained.
The evening’s décor reflected the company’s agricultural roots. Stam described how the centerpieces, made from maple wood and decorated with edible peppers, thyme, and sage, honored the connection to turkey farming. “We even had placemats designed as old newspapers featuring stories from our past, starting from 1996,” she noted, emphasizing the event’s theme of tradition and history.
Matt Steele from the Turkey Farmers of Ontario (TFO) also praised the Schlegel family’s contributions to the industry. “The TFO represents turkey producers across Ontario, and families like the Schlegels form the backbone of our organization. Without their hard work and the values, they share, the success of the broader sector wouldn’t be possible,” Steele remarked.
The speeches throughout the evening were filled with gratitude and admiration for the Schlegel family’s commitment to their community and employees. Brian Ropp, Mayor of North Middlesex, shared personal memories of the Schlegel family and their contributions to the community. “The Schlegels have always kept their roots in the community, supporting projects like doctors’ offices and the local nursing home,” Ropp said, commending the family for their lasting impact beyond farming.
Steve Pinsonneault, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex, echoed these sentiments. “It’s great to see a company so dedicated to sustainability and community,” Pinsonneault remarked, recognizing the Schlegel family’s influence on both the agricultural industry and the local economy.
The 60th anniversary celebration was not only a reflection of the Schlegel family’s success in the farming industry but also a testament to their dedication to their community and the values they hold dear.
