ADELAIDE METCALFE - At the October 7 council meeting, CAO Morgan Calvert, presented a report on a new initiative, the Environment and Sustainability Working Group. The working group, led by North Middlesex, aims to foster collaboration among neighbouring municipalities to address shared environmental and sustainability concerns. Participating municipalities include Adelaide Metcalfe, South Huron, Middlesex Centre, Bluewater, and Lucan Biddulph.
Calvert explained that the initiative began in April 2024 when North Middlesex approached surrounding municipalities to discuss joint efforts related to green initiatives and sustainable practices. Since May, the group has convened three times to discuss potential areas of focus, such as waste collection, recycling, stormwater management, and opportunities for reducing insurance costs through environmental programs.
The working group’s early discussions have emphasized defining its scope, drafting a Terms of Reference, and exploring how to allocate the necessary resources. Calvert highlighted that while participation in the group does not currently involve any direct financial costs for Adelaide Metcalfe, staff time remains a significant consideration. If a project requires additional resources beyond the current volunteer efforts, the proposal would return to council for a decision on whether to allocate further funding.
Calvert also noted recent discussions with TRY Recycling, which offered insights into current waste management practices and diversion strategies. The recycling company has invited members of the working group and council to visit its facility in Middlesex Centre, which will give an opportunity for local officials to learn more about best practices in waste management.
Councillor Garett Kingma inquired about financing for future initiatives. Calvert responded that while funding has not yet been discussed in detail, efforts are underway to explore partnerships with colleges and universities. Such collaborations could provide access to research expertise and funding opportunities to support data collection and project development. Mayor Sue Clarke also suggested that grant opportunities could be explored to help finance the group’s efforts, including potential partnerships with research institutions.
Council unanimously supported the recommendation to receive the report for information and endorsed further exploration of Adelaide Metcalfe’s involvement in the Environment and Sustainability Working Group.
