SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX - The rehabilitation of Simpson Park is set to be completed by the end of 2024, following the recent reallocation of capital surplus funds. During the October 9th council meeting, the councillors approved a proposal to use $32,416.51 in surplus from other 2024 capital projects to finalize remaining amenities at the park. This decision will allow for the timely completion of the project, ensuring that Simpson Park will be ready for public use by the spring of 2025.
Kevin Miller, the Manager of Community Services, explained that the rehabilitation of Simpson Park, which had been budgeted for in 2023, faced additional costs due to market fluctuations. As a result, three key components of the park—an accessible deck around the new washrooms, a walking path loop, and the installation of pickleball nets—were left incomplete. The $200,000 originally allocated for the project had been nearly exhausted, leaving these amenities unfunded.
Miller outlined the plan to reallocate money from other capital projects. This would ensure the park’s completion, including all unfunded features. According to Miller, “by reallocating the surplus, we can finish the walking path by the end of October and install the pickleball nets and deck before winter.” He added that these improvements are essential for accessibility and recreational activities in the park.
The recommendation to approve the reallocation of funds was met with support from councillors. Councillors Myers and Choi moved to adopt the proposal. The motion passed unanimously.
This timely action by council allows residents of Southwest Middlesex to look forward to a fully functional and improved Simpson Park in the coming months, supporting the township’s strategic goal of promoting livability and well-being within the community.
