Fed steers and heifers sold through auction markets this week at 256 head, were up 32 head from the previous week but 222 head smaller than the same time last year. Fed steers sold from $232.82-$249.75/cwt averaging $242.14/cwt, down $0.32/cwt from the previous week’s trade but $11.63/cwt above year ago prices. Fed heifers sold from $213.48-$243.19/cwt averaging $230.78/cwt, down $7.30/cwt from last week but $0.75/cwt higher than last year. Auction markets reported last week fed steers and heifers sold at steady prices. On October 22nd, fed cows sold actively at steady to stronger prices. On Thursday October 24th, fed steers and heifers sold $2.00-$3.00 higher.
In Ontario, dressed sales have been reported at $406/cwt delivered, fully steady with the previous week Eastern Canadian processing is down 13% YTD with steers down 10% and heifers down 9%, cows down 25% and bulls down 37%. For the week ending October 19th, Eastern Canadian processing was 22% below year ago levels and 19% above the five-year average. For the week ending October 12th, Eastern Canadian fed cattle and cow exports to the US were 2,805 head, 2% above last year and 28% above the five-year average. YTD exports are up 30.5% from last year.
Cull cow receipts sold through auction markets this week were 1,934 head, up 298 head from last week but down 974 head from last year. Cows were selling from $123.14-$177.89/cwt averaging $150.07/cwt, up $2.36/cwt from last week and up $41.01/cwt from last year. Beef cow prices sold from $121.98-$198.64/cwt averaging $160.75/cwt, up $5.55/cwt from the previous week’s trade and $43.57/cwt above year ago prices. Auction markets last week reported cows sold strong. On Tuesday October 22nd, cows and bulls sold steady. Cows sold fully steady to stronger on October 23rd
.Receipts of 7,659 stocker and feeder cattle sold through Ontario auction markets this week up 1,401 head from the previous week but 3,932 head fewer than the same week last year. Auction markets reported last week all classes of feeder cattle sold fully steady and stockers sold steady to stronger on an active market.
On Tuesday October 22nd, good quality stockers and feeder cattle sold on active demand at steady prices. On Wednesday October 23rd, feeder cattle sold actively at stronger prices. Actual average prices collected this week saw steers from 400-500 lbs trading $11.44/cwt lower than last week on average, 500-600 lbs up $0.02/cwt, 600-700 lbs up $3.21/cwt, 700-800 lbs down $2.86/cwt, 800-900 lbs were down $6.29/cwt, steers 900-1000 lbs up $1.75/cwt and steers 1000 lbs plus averaged $0.07/cwt weaker than the previous week’s weighted average prices. Heifers from 300-400 lbs were down $23.40/cwt from last week on average, 400-500 lbs up $1.05/cwt, 500-600 lbs up $1.42/cwt, 600-700 lbs up $16.87/cwt, 700-800 lbs down $3.54/cwt, 800-900 lbs down $16.33/cwt and heifers 900 lbs and over averaged $15.66/cwt weaker than the previous week’s weighted average prices.
