ADELAIDE METCALFE - At the November 18 council meeting, the township reviewed and approved funding recommendations for the 2025 Council Grant Program. Treasurer Johnny Pereira presented the report, detailing the program’s purpose, evaluation process, and the single application received this year.
The Council Grant Program is designed to provide limited financial and in-kind assistance to community organizations that contribute to the township’s well-being and growth. Applications were accepted throughout October and evaluated using a standardized review process to ensure compliance with the township’s grant policy.
For the 2025 program, the township received one application, submitted by the Kerwood Adelaide Metcalfe Optimist Club. The club requested $6,050 in financial support for various community events, including soccer games, a ball tournament, and a Sports Day and BBQ at Kerwood Park. Additionally, the club requested in-kind contributions, including park rental exemptions and the use of a photocopier for promotional materials.
Pereira noted that the request exceeded the $1,000 limit set by the township’s grant policy by $1,300. After evaluating the application, staff recommended a reduction in the financial grant to account for the overage in in-kind contributions. The adjusted recommendation was for a total grant of $4,750, which includes the full request and the adjusted financial support.
During the presentation, Mayor Sue Clarke and council inquired about other applications but were informed that no additional submissions had been received this year. Pereira assured council that the Kerwood Adelaide Metcalfe Optimist Club’s application aligned with the grant program’s objectives and provided valuable support for community-focused events.
Council unanimously approved the staff recommendation, granting the club pre-budget approval for $4,750 in financial assistance and full approval for the in-kind contributions. Councillor Noordhof moved the motion, seconded by Councillor MacKinnon.
Under the approved terms, township staff will prepare the necessary correspondence and issue payment to the Optimist Club in January 2025. Council also emphasized the importance of fostering community engagement through initiatives like the grant program, which continues to support local organizations and their efforts to enhance the township’s vibrancy and quality of life.
