MIDDLESEX CENTRE - Middlesex Centre is getting 162 combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to help improve home safety and prevent deaths. The announcement was made prior to the December 4th council meeting.
The devices are being supplied through the Safe Community Project Zero initiative which is spearheaded by Enbridge Gas. Over the past 16 years, the program has supplied more than 101,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments.
Representatives from Enbridge Gas, the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Middlesex Centre Fire Services were on hand for the announcement.
“These alarms are a critical second line of defence against carbon monoxide poisoning known as the ‘silent killer’, said Don Beauchamp, Manager of Central Operations for Enbridge Gas in a statement.
“Middlesex Centre is grateful for this generous donation from Project Zero and for Enbridge’s ongoing support of this important safety program,” said Mayor Aina DeViet. “Middlesex Centre Fire Services will see that these alarms go to where they are most needed, providing peace-of-mind to residents of our community,” added DeViet.
Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors provide an early warning to safely escape from a house fire or exposure to carbon monoxide gas, which is a toxic and odorless by-product of incomplete combustion of many kinds of common fuels.
The alarms will be distributed in Middlesex Centre through a variety of means by the Fire Department, including at public education events, and when firefighters come across a home without the devices.
