For this final 2024 edition, I wish to highlight the enhancements our team has implemented to deliver a superior journalistic product. Our primary goal is to keep you (our readers) well-informed about news and stories predominantly from Middlesex County. Additionally, we strive to ensure that your time spent with a copy of The Banner is enjoyable. Each team member contributes their best skills to craft a top-quality local newspaper.
Key improvements this year include a complete overhaul in design and layout. We have updated our logo and allocated more space for content. A crucial enhancement is the larger font size, ensuring readability for everyone. All pages are now in colour, improving the presentation of our photos, cartoons, and advertisements. We have moved away from a simplistic and unengaging format to one that is more reader-friendly and well-organized.
Journalistically, we have deepened our engagement with the various communities within the county. Our primary sources—and audience—are the residents of Middlesex County. We cover municipal council meetings, local events, and topics of local interest. Moreover, my opinion column, which reflects on different issues from my dual perspective as an international journalist and this newspaper’s editor, is featured in every edition.
New sections have been introduced this year. Beyond our municipal coverage, you might have noticed additional stories in our “More Middlesex News,” “Further Insights,” and “More Regional News” sections. Jeffrey Reed’s “Reed’s County Sports Report” and Alan Good’s insights in his “Travel” and “Seniors Spotlight” columns are noteworthy additions to The Banner.
Our free local events section remains a valuable resource for all county residents. Feel free to contact us at editor@banner.on.ca to feature your event or activity.
This year, we have also bolstered our ties with two key local institutions: Glencoe & District Historical Society and Middlesex Centre Archives. It’s crucial that we preserve the rich history and cultural heritage of Middlesex County, which is the impetus behind our new “Archive Alley” page. Special thanks to Mary Simpson and Carol Small for their constant support and significant contributions to our community.
Lastly, I encourage you not to overlook our enhanced website. Visit www.middlesexbanner.ca to catch up on our latest stories. While there are more points I could mention, I would rather express my gratitude to our team—Mark Holmes, Zac Kinsman, Alan Good, Jan Sims, and Olena Riznyk—for their exceptional work this year. Merry Christmas and my best wishes for a prosperous 2025 to all our readers!
