The Foreign Legionnaires advanced carefully, some running forward to new cover while comrades maintained covering fire from behind. That was enough to keep down the heads of the Russian defenders of the Kerch Bridge. They had already seen what had happened to their fellow soldiers, many of whom had been felled by heavy fire from the Legionnaires.
Borys Nadiya was now down in a prone position on his belly, his rifle loosing rounds in groups of three as he had been taught during his years in the Canadian Army.
To his left and slightly further ahead - taking cover - was Timmy Gleeson, another Canuck Legionnaire. Behind Borys, Jim MacDonald scurried forward, carrying a light machine gun and draped in two belts of ammunition.
And then as if out of nowhere screamed the engines of something powerful, something fast.
Overhead, two Ukrainian F-16 fighter-bombers screamed towards the bridge, so fast they were gone in an instant. Borys watched as they circled around to come in for another run.
“Look at that!” shouted MacDonald as he busied himself setting up his machine gun, unfolding its bipod legs at the end of the barrel and then flipping open the breech and feeding in the belts of ammo.
Timmy was like him - amazed at the speed of the planes.
“Here they come!” called out Borys as the jets raced in, ready to launch their missiles.
“Oh no!” cried Timmy. From off to the left, an S-400 surface to air missile rocketed towards the jets in an effort to take them down before they could launch their deadly cruise missiles.
The planes were in close to their target, much closer than normal for these missiles, which could fly in from hundreds of kilometres.
There was a puff of smoke, soundless, from both jets, as each fired a pair of Storm Shadow missiles at the Kerch Bridge. They hit just as explosions from below the bridge signalled that the Special Forces had been successful in setting off their demolition charges to knock out the bridge supports.
The missiles struck the target as the S-400 missile destroyed one of the F-16s. Such was the Ukraine War - massive numbers of troops, bombs, guns, and casualties.
A shot rang out. Borys never saw it coming. He died instantly.
