SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX - The Municipality is moving forward with an application for funding through the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to support upgrades at the Project 2000 facility at the Southwest Middlesex Recreation Centre in Glencoe. During the March 5 council meeting, councillors unanimously approved the submission of a capital grant application, which aims to enhance accessibility and infrastructure at the site.
Project 2000, originally built by the Glencoe District Lions Club, includes a pavilion, washrooms, and a concession stand. The proposed upgrades focus on improving accessibility features such as automatic door openers and accessible washroom stalls, alongside structural and safety enhancements like masonry repairs, LED lighting, and sanitation upgrades.
CAO Amanda Gubbels outlined the details of the grant, which provides between $10,000 and $200,000 in funding. “If submitted, the application does not require any financial commitment on behalf of the municipality at this time,” she told council, emphasizing that full funding through the program would eliminate any need for municipal contributions.
To strengthen the grant application, the municipality has partnered with the Glencoe District Lions Club and the Glencoe Agricultural Society, both of which have played key roles in the facility’s development and maintenance. “Both organizations have supported the collaborative agreement that is attached to the report and will be submitted with the grant application,” Gubbels noted. She added that partnerships like this significantly improve the municipality’s chances of securing funding.
If approved, the revitalization project would not only modernize the facility but also extend its lifespan, ensuring it remains a valuable asset for the community. Gubbels stated that the project budget had been slightly adjusted to stay under the $200,000 funding threshold.
With the grant application deadline set for the same day, council moved swiftly to approve the submission. Councillor Ed Myers moved the motion, seconded by Councillor Joel Haggith, and the vote carried unanimously.
The municipality now awaits the outcome of the application process, with a decision expected from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in the coming months.
