SPORTS - As the West Yeck Division Junior C playoff saga continued into round two, the games have been far from dull. Of the eight teams in that division, four were left.
The Exeter Hawks faced off against the Port Stanley Sailors. The latter has been stellar this season, rising from the bottom to steadily take their place in this, second from the final, round.
The teams played back and forth in each other’s arena, starting in Exeter. In each game, the home team lost at home while the visitors prevailed. A full six games played out until the deciding game, each team taking three wins.
Game seven was in Exeter in front of what was recorded as 947 fans in attendance. Port Stanley lead by one at the end of the first period. No scoring in the second, the Hawks tied it up five minutes into the third period and then made the go-ahead goal two minutes later. It would be the final and deciding shot, Exeter winning at home 3-2.
The second pair, the Petrolia Flyers and the Mount Brydges Bulldogs, played out their round in six games. Like the first two teams, each won a game at first, Petrolia being first to win. The difference was that the teams won at home. The Flyers won in game five taking the game back to Mount Brydges turf.
Petrolia prevailed with a goal in period one, and the teams each scored twice in the second. Oddly, period three was scoreless, giving the Flyers the win at 3-2, and that round.
Now, the Flyers face the Hawks in the final round to see who is the best team in the West Yeck Division. Game one was Friday March 21 on Petrolia turf, with the home boys taking it, 5-1. Sunday the second game was in Exeter. Exeter lost again, 2-1, and left the question to be answered in the week to come, will this be another long bout or will it be over quickly?
