DELAWARE - On Saturday, March 29, the Middlesex Centre Archives hosted their annual Heritage Fair at the Delaware Community Centre, drawing enthusiasts from across the county to celebrate and learn more about our local history. The event offered a variety of exhibits, presentations, and activities, making it a day full of discovery and appreciation for Middlesex County’s rich heritage.
Carol Small, Past Chair of Middlesex Centre Archives, emphasized the significance of the event. “This shows the rich and deep heritage of Middlesex County from all corners and from the area, and the need for county archives,” she stated.
Dave Zavitz, Director of Middlesex Centre Archives and organizer of the Heritage Fair, spoke about the importance of preserving historical records. “If you don’t have what’s there today, then you don’t have any history and no information to make it important,” Zavitz explained. His passion for historical preservation underscored the crucial role archives play in maintaining the community’s cultural legacy.
Zavitz also shared insights into the logistics of organizing such an event, revealing that despite previous experience, each year presents its own set of challenges. “It’s a fair amount of work to organize and put it together,” he said. According to Zavitz, ensuring the event meets the demands of exhibitors and attendees while coordinating the facility’s requirements involves significant effort and coordination.
One of the highlights of the Heritage Fair was the special presentation on the new “Full Text Search” feature on Family Search Labs, presented by the Lambton Branch of Ontario Ancestors. This presentation attracted an important audience, eager to learn more about utilizing digital tools for genealogical research.
Additionally, the fair featured homemade food prepared by members of the Middlesex Centre Archives, adding a personal touch that celebrated the community spirit.
The event also included book sales and various displays by local heritage and historical groups, such as the impressive genealogical research by David R. Elliott, Ph.D., who showcased his work on Irish genealogy.
Zavitz’s final message to families was poignant, stressing the importance of safeguarding our historical artifacts. “It’s important that you make sure that they’re protected for the future. And if it means donation to protect your family history, then find the source in your area to donate it,” he advised.
The Heritage Fair not only served as a platform for learning and networking but also as a reminder of the importance of preserving our historical narratives for future generations.
