MIDDLESEX & LONDON - Dozens of writers, readers, and community supporters gathered on the evening of June 3 at the Portuguese Club in London to celebrate the launch of Out of the Woods: Voices from the Forest City, the first anthology published by the London Writers Society.
The event marked the culmination of more than a year of planning, submissions, and collaborative work by members of the society—many of whom are based in London and across Middlesex County. The project features 44 pieces from 35 authors and includes fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
Society President Donna Costa and Vice President Brenda Martin opened the evening with remarks of thanks and recognition for the team of volunteers, judges, and contributors who helped bring the publication to life. Several of the selected authors were present with their families, celebrating not just a book launch, but the creation of a shared literary milestone.
A highlight of the evening was the presence of internationally acclaimed author Emma Donoghue, who served as the final judge for the anthology’s selection process. Donoghue shared a few words during the presentation, applauding the quality and care that went into the book’s creation.
“This is just a classy project at every level,” Donoghue said. “But this is not just a book—it’s actually a community. I want to congratulate not just those of you whose pieces made the final cut, but also everyone who submitted.”
She also praised the book’s visual presentation, noting that its professional design added to its overall impact. “Quite apart from what’s in it, it’s just a gorgeous piece of book,” she said, emphasizing how thoughtful design can elevate a publication. “That does make a difference.”
The program included live readings from four of the writers, each offering a glimpse into the range of stories and voices represented in the anthology.
The evening concluded with a lively reception and buffet, giving attendees the chance to connect over literature and local creativity.
The London Writers Society, which welcomes members from across Southwestern Ontario, continues to provide a platform for new and experienced writers alike through monthly meetings, critique groups, and literary programming.
