SPORTS - A Saturday October 24th game commenced with the Lucan Irish hosting the Mount Brydges Bulldogs, bringing action to a game full of penalties. The last time these teams met was in September, when Mount Brydges ousted the Lucan team, 7-2. Going into this match, the Bulldogs were in second place in the West Yeck division while the Irish struggled in seventh.
In the first period, both teams received penalties. Mount Brydges garnered several and almost managed to make a short-handed goal on the home team during one, Tyse Loucks making a great save—one of 27. About the ten-minute mark things became rough and players were sent sprawling on the ice or into the boards.
Scrambles at both nets caused the audience to cry out as goalies fought back their opponents. Period two continued with the drama as 4 on 4 action cleared the ice a couple of times. At one point Lucan had a 4 on 3 opportunity. Mount Brydges goalie, Parker Barnard, saved his team 15 times in that game.
Also in the second, a Lucan player went down awhile and a linesman soon after. Both seemed to recover and skate on. Things became heated at the end of the second period as frustration mounted at a scoreless game and one Bulldog sent for a ten-minute unsportsmanlike penalty. Period three remained scoreless and penalty-less.
The next night, Lucan went to play the Aylmer Spitfires who had just come from a 2-1 win over the Exeter Hawks Saturday evening. The last game the Spitfires and Irish played saw Lucan the victor. Sunday night, however, with no scoring in the first, the teams tied 2-2 in the second. The home team jumped ahead in period three to end the game at a 5-2 win for the Spitfires.
Meanwhile, the other team in the county, the North Middlesex Stars, after a close match on Saturday against Thamesford, enjoyed a 4-3 win at home. At press time the Stars remained the West Yeck leader with 18 points so far. Mount Brydges trails in second place with 17 points and Lucan is seventh with 9 points.
