GLENCOE - On June 10, the Glencoe New Horizon Club celebrated its 50-year Anniversary with cake, ice cream and stories. The club stared in 1975 with a federal grant application. The original intention was to set up a location and a time in Glencoe for the 55+ crowd to play cards and build community. Furniture was purchased, a New Horizon Club Room was included in the newly built Glencoe Arena and the games began.
On any given Tuesday or Friday afternoon you will find 3 to 6 tables of friendly seniors playing Bid Euchre in the Mitch Scheerer Room at the Glencoe Arena. For a toonie, you can join in. “Newbies are actually welcome” states George Langford, our newest member. “It’s good for people to have someplace to go that is easy to manage and where the people are nice,” says Jan Little. Laura McCallum has been coming for over 25 years because she just loves to play cards. Gord Mitchell shows up for “…the fun, the laughs and to get the news in the community.”
According to President Howard van der Hooft, the club has changed over the years. In the early days there were bus trips, card tournaments, pot luck lunches, birthday celebrations and a variety of card games. Currently we play Bid Euchre twice a week and we enjoy a light luncheon three times a year. We have revived the catered Christmas Lunch (complete with all of the trimmings) and we have started to play Shuffleboard upstairs in the arena at 1:00 on Thursdays.
As you can see, 50 years have passed but the Glencoe New Horizon Club is still going strong - building community by playing cards.
