When I was a child, I remember feeling deeply proud whenever I sang Peru’s national anthem or saluted the flag on Independence Day. That pride was something I carried in my chest like a badge of honour. Still, I couldn’t help noticing that most of my classmates didn’t feel the same. Tired or indifferent expressions were common on those sunny mornings at my small school.
Fortunately, my family always valued our national identity. They taught me to honour our country in any way I could. That’s what patriotism truly is—giving the best of yourself to honour your homeland. Let’s not confuse it with nationalism, which often leads to excessive and harmful protectionism and can threaten the very core of democracy.
Many years have passed since I finished school. And while my love for Peru hasn’t changed, my loyalties have evolved. Canada is now my home—the place where I want to grow, build, and belong. Canada represents hope, growth, and opportunity. Ontario is nature, beauty, peace, and patience. Middlesex County is my home, my work, my community, and my constant source of motivation.
In these 158 years, Canada has shown the world what it means to thrive through hard work, kindness, and unity. This country goes far beyond its modern history—it stretches back thousands of years, blessing those who have walked this land long before us: from First Nations to early settlers, and now to people like me, seeking a better life.
We are living in times of unprecedented global uncertainty. Wars, violence, and rising extremism are shaking nations. Former allies now seem distant, and fear is becoming a global language. Yet, despite all of this, Canada continues to shine. With courage and dignity, it faces each challenge with determination. Canada stands as a beacon of democracy and freedom, not only for the Americas, but for the entire world.
Just days ago, during the Canada Day celebrations in Delaware, Glencoe, and Strathroy, I felt the same pride I once experienced as a child. But this time, it was amplified—shared and echoed by others.
I saw people of all ages, dressed in red and white, waving flags with joy and pride for this beautiful, fertile land. May we always stay proud.
Thank you, Canada, for sharing your greatness with me.
