MIDDLESEX CENTRE - Middlesex Centre has a new Arts & Culture policy. The policy was endorsed at the August 6th council meeting, and will serve as a framework for enhancing cultural programming in the municipality.
“Whenever we apply for a grant, they will ask us ‘where’s your arts and culture policy?’ Now we have one and it will evolve,” said Councillor Frank Berze when the staff report came up for discussion.
The policy is built around several core components. These include supporting an arts scene, and offering a range of programs in areas that include art, music, dance and theatre. As well it calls for partnering with local organizations and encouraging funding through grants.
The report lists arts as falling under the headings of, visual, literary, performing, media, as well as material arts such as ceramics and textiles. There are also “arts industries” cited, which could include graphic design.
“Arts and culture are vital components of the Municipality of Middlesex Centre’s identity and contribute significantly to the community’s sense of place, civic pride, and overall well-being,” outlined in the staff report presented to council.
Regarding program offerings, the report mentions structured classes, workshops and “events designed to engage individuals in the creation and appreciation of art, theatre, music, or dance, facilitated by qualified instructors or experienced practitioners.”
The policy is also predicated on investing in community spaces such as galleries, performance venues, and studio spaces.
The development of an Arts & Culture policy was identified in the Community Services Master Plan as a key recommendation to “strengthen community identity through creative expression.”
As for the financial implications, the report says implementation will be managed through existing operating budgets. Future requirements will be brought forward at budget time or in separate reports to council.
