ADELAIDE METCALFE – Council has approved the purchase of new water drafting equipment for the township’s fire department, fully funded by a generous $8,000 anonymous donation received through the Township Firefighters Association.
During the August 11 council meeting, Treasurer Johnny Pereira explained that while the equipment had originally been planned for the 2026 budget, the donation allows the department to move forward sooner. “The fire department received a generous donation of about $8,000 from an anonymous member of the community,” Pereira said. “Chief Dan [Parker] is looking at purchasing water drafting equipment… the total cost of the equipment is $6,832.43 plus HST. There would be no cost impact to the township, as the donation would fully cover the cost.”
The new equipment will enhance the fire department’s ability to draft water from ponds, rivers, or portable tanks — a crucial capability for rural firefighting where hydrants are limited. While the funds will come from the Firefighters Association, the equipment will still be added to the township’s asset management plan for future replacement planning.
Mayor Sue Clarke emphasized the importance of this step, noting that including the equipment in the asset management plan ensures long-term accountability.
The motion to approve the purchase was moved by Councillor Garett Kingma and seconded by Councillor Mike Brodie. With all councillors in favour, the motion carried unanimously.
The upgrade reflects the community’s ongoing support for its emergency services and will improve the township’s firefighting capabilities without impacting the municipal budget.
