ILDERTON - Curling Day in Canada is being held on Saturday January 31st., and the Ilderton Club has a full day of activities for curlers, and those who new to the sport, to enjoy.
“We are hosting a pancake breakfast, and an open house for those who wish to step on the ice and try some curling”, says Curling Club Publicity Director Lynn Baker.
And that’s just the beginning. “Then our club will be participating in Curling Canada’s Big Shootout. That’s our club’s chance to be the best at drawing to the pin (centre of the middle ring) in 30 minutes, and hopefully win $5,000 for club improvements,” says Baker.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the $5,000. However, just having people come to our facility and see what we are and what we do, is important,” adds Baker.
There is a charge for the breakfast, but if someone wants to try their hand at curling, there’s no charge for the introduction to curling. For those who are new to the sport, there will be instructors on hand. “All ages are welcome, and please bring clean running shoes. Helmets are mandatory for children ages 12 and under. If anybody feels comfortable in “drawing the pin”, they just need to let the club know that they’ll be participating by calling the office (519-666-1810),” says Baker.
The Ilderton Curling Club is very popular, with a membership of around 525 people. Located beside the Ilderton Arena, the Club draws members from across Middlesex County and beyond. Last year, the Club received a $15-thousand-dollar donation from MutualONE Insurance, which made possible upgrades to the facility to improve accessibility. “We are a very social club as well. We offer competitive and social curling. “It’s a great way to make new friends, and get some exercise at the same time,” says Baker.
