KOMOKA - Motorist travelling through Komoka now have to slow down even more. The speed limit along a stretch of Glendon Dr. east of Komoka Rd. has been reduced to 50 kilometers per hour from 70 kph.
Glendon Dr. is one of the busiest roads in Middlesex County, which was underscored by the addition of two recent traffic roundabouts in Kilworth/Komoka and to the east where the road turns into Oxford Dr. in London.
With new developments in and around the Komoka Wellness Centres and plans envisioned for more housing, the lower speed limit on Glendon Dr. was decided on by Middlesex County, which oversees the road. “The County has been monitoring this area for quite a while and with all the development and proliferation of entrances along this stretch it was determined that a consistent 50 km/hr posting would be safer and more appropriate for this stretch of road,” says Middlesex County Engineer Chris Traini.
The lower speed limit may have come as a surprise to some motorists, but Traini says he’s not aware of the number of speeding tickets being issued in this area.
As for how the speed limits are determined, Traini points to provincial guidelines. “The County generally relies on guidelines followed across Ontario such as the Ontario Traffic Manual for guidance on speed limits,” says Traini.
Although the new, lower speed limit covers the stretch of Glendon Dr. in front of the Komoka Wellness Centre, there are no plans at this time to add a traffic light at Tunks Lane, which leads into the Wellness Centre. “There’s a report on the next County Council agenda with this information which should be posted shortly. Staff have been monitoring the intersection of Glendon and Tunks but it was not included in this year’s set of traffic counts as the last time this was reviewed it fell well short of the levels that would warrant signalization,” says Traini.
