LUCAN – For Laura Preisler-Annesley, opening Dessert First Bakery Cafe was more than launching a business–it was the beginning of a new chapter built on experience, creativity, and a strong desire to serve the local community.
Laura has operated the bakery at its current location for three years, building on more than 30 years of experience in catering and professional baking. After a major life transition, she decided to establish a permanent bakery space rather than continuing mobile catering work.
“I wanted a place where people could come in, feel welcome, and celebrate life’s moments,” Laura said.
Dessert First Bakery Cafe offers a wide selection of freshly baked goods, including cookies, brownies, croissants, cheesecakes, breads, cupcakes, and rotating specialty items. Many products are prepared from scratch each day, with baking beginning early in the morning to ensure freshness for customers. In addition to desserts, the cafe also provides lunch options such as sandwiches and soup, along with catering services including charcuterie boards and custom event orders.
One of the bakery’s most distinctive features is its open-concept kitchen. Customers can watch the baking process in real time, creating transparency and strengthening trust between the business and the community.
“I wanted people to see what they’re eating and know it’s made with care,” Laura said.
Beyond baking, Dessert First also supports other small local businesses by offering shelf space for handmade products from area artisans. Items such as honey, greeting cards, crafts, and small gift products are featured in the shop, giving local creators an opportunity to reach new customers.
Family support has played a key role in the bakery’s success. Laura expressed heartfelt gratitude to her daughter Sarah and son-in-law Adam for their help and encouragement. The couple owns the building and provided the foundation that allowed the bakery to open and grow.
“Without their support, this would not have been possible,” Laura said.
Keeping prices accessible has been another guiding principle for the business. While industry advisors suggested raising prices, Laura chose to focus on affordability and community access.
“I want people to be able to celebrate, even during difficult times,” she said. “Small joys can make a big difference.”
Looking ahead, Laura hopes to expand community engagement by introducing baking workshops and birthday party experiences where children can decorate cupcakes and learn basic baking skills.
With its welcoming atmosphere, handcrafted products, and strong community focus, Dessert First Bakery Cafe continues to grow as more than just a dessert stop–it has become a place where connection, creativity, and care come together.
