At the Strathroy & District Chamber of Commerce, we witness the heartbeat of our community every day. We see it in the early morning light of our downtown cafes, the steady hum of our local manufacturers, and the dedicated care of our professional service providers.
Recently, we engaged our members through our 2026 Business Voice Survey to gain a real-world perspective on our local economy. While the provincial outlook remains cautious—with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce reporting that business confidence across the province has dipped to 23%—we discovered something truly special right here at home.
Despite broader economic headwinds, our local members gave the Strathroy-Caradoc business climate a resounding vote of confidence: an average rating of 7.5 out of 10. This resilience is a powerful testament to the loyalty of our residents and the unwavering grit of our entrepreneurs. However, we cannot ignore the hurdles ahead. From discussions regarding international tariffs to the daily pressure of the cost of living, uncertainty remains the primary concern for our members. While we have fortunately avoided the major layoffs seen in other regions, the “fear of the unknown” can be just as taxing as any direct economic hit.
At the Chamber, we believe it is time for a strategic mindset shift. Rather than focusing solely on external uncertainties, we must look at the incredible opportunities in front of us. Our community is growing, and with that growth comes the chance to reinvent how we support our local economy. There is a rising demand for regional travel and entertainment, and the “Shop Local, Shop Canadian” movement continues to gain momentum.
On March 19, we hosted a Leadership Lunch with MPP for Lambton-Middlesex Steve Pinsonneault, Middlesex County Warden Susan Clarke, and Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Colin Grantham. We presented these leaders with our survey findings, integrated with the Ontario Chamber 2026 Economic Report, to discuss a roadmap for our region’s success.
The feedback from our members was clear. Beyond the overarching economic uncertainty that can stifle consumer spending, our local businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to cut through the digital noise to reach both long-standing residents and the influx of newcomers to our region. Other cited challenges include our rural location, internet reliability, affordable housing, and the ongoing need for volunteers and donations. Furthermore, issues such as parking, traffic, funding, and “red tape” continue to be significant barriers to growth.
To ensure Strathroy-Caradoc remains competitive, the Chamber recommends a two-pronged approach. First, we must see strategic investment in regional “Shop Local” initiatives to capture and retain local spending. Second, we recommend that all levels of government prioritize capital investment in essential utilities and commercial-zone enhancements.
Our community’s strength lies in its ability to adapt and support one another. By addressing these challenges head-on, we can turn uncertainty into a catalyst for sustainable growth.
