When I first became involved with the Chamber years ago, I quickly learned just how much a Chamber does behind the scenes. Reflecting on my year as President of the Strathroy and District Chamber of Commerce the answer is clear: we champion, support, inform and connect our business community.
Over the past year I’ve had the opportunity to meet business owners and entrepreneurs from many backgrounds and at different stages of their journey. What I’ve enjoyed most is seeing what happens when those people come together sharing knowledge and encouragement. These moments remind me why a strong local business network matters.
Our business community is diverse and dynamic–While our businesses may look very different from one another, many of the challenges we face are remarkably similar. Having people around us to share ideas, experience and support reminds us that we don’t have to navigate those challenges alone.
The Chamber also has an important role in giving local businesses a voice, advocating on our behalf. This past year we continued building relationships between our business community and municipal leaders through events such as our Mayor’s Breakfast and Town Hall meetings. These conversations give business owners an opportunity to ask questions, share concerns and ideas and better understand what is happening in our community.
As a business owner myself, I understand the determination and independence that comes with building something of your own. There is a real sense of pride in making your own decisions, taking the risks and driving your own success. Having a network of people who understand those challenges and can offer perspective or a helpful connection is invaluable.
Supporting a local business, attending a local event, making an introduction, mentoring someone who is just getting started, or taking an interest in what other businesses are doing all contribute to the kind of business community we want to have.
If this past year has reminded me of anything it’s that we are stronger when we champion one another.
I’m proud to be part of the work the Chamber is doing to create those connections, elevate local voices and help build a business community that is ready for what comes next. I’m looking forward to continuing that work together.
