KERWOOD – The heart of Kerwood Park came alive on Saturday, July 26, as residents and visitors gathered for the 5th Annual Adelaide Metcalfe Sports Day & BBQ, a free community celebration organized by the Kerwood Adelaide Metcalfe Optimist Club.
From the moment the gates opened at 2 p.m., families explored a field full of attractions. Children climbed colourful inflatable slides, ran through a shark-themed bouncer, and tried their hand at games while others queued for balloon animals, glitter tattoos, and face painting. A caricature artist captured smiles in playful sketches.
This year’s milestone edition featured two major additions—a climbing wall and an axe-throwing station—made possible by a record 47 local sponsors. “We routinely endeavour to expand or add new items each year as sponsorship support has grown in the community,” said Heather Horning, a member of the organizing committee.
The event’s free admission is a deliberate choice. “We could not do this event without support from our sponsors,” Horning explained. “This sponsorship means that we can provide a free day for all and a low-cost meal. Our goal is to break even.”
As the afternoon unfolded, music filled the air, encouraging neighbours to linger and chat under the summer sky. Volunteers kept activities running smoothly, “every member of our committee has different strengths and connections which help to easily bring a variety of activities to the park,” Horning said.
By early evening, the scent of barbecue chicken drew a steady line to the dinner station. Serving 320 meals, the dinner proved to be more than just a fundraiser—it was a social anchor. “Some people enjoy a takeout meal while many stay at the park to enjoy their meal, which helps to build the sense of community,” Horning noted.
For some residents, the day stirred fond memories of past gatherings. “Some people have said that our event reminds them of Metcalfe Days,” Horning shared. “We hope people will have many fond memories, similar to that event, for years to come. We also hope our event helps to form and maintain a strong sense of community for our township.”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sense of connection lingered—proof that the Adelaide Metcalfe Sports Day & BBQ has become a fixture in the township’s calendar and a cherished tradition in the making.
