COLDSTREAM - Coldstream Library is taking art to the people with its new Free Little Art Gallery. Located just outside the library branch beside the Middlesex Centre municipal building, the gallery features a specially-designed box that contains both art supplies and finished artwork.
“The first one I saw was in Grand Bend. I really liked the idea. We have little free libraries in this area, so I thought this would enhance that,” says Coldstream Library Supervisor, Leslie-Anne Steeper-Doxtator.
The official opening ceremony was held on October 2nd. And it’s already generating interest. “The municipal office workers have been over checking it out,” says Steeper-Doxtator. As well, she says local library patrons are enthusiastic. “They love the artwork. They think it’s really bright and colourful. They love that it’s clear on the top because they say at night you can see the lights shining in.”
Art supplies include things like hand-died yarn for people to put their own talents to use. The box will be open, for people to take materials that inspire their creativity.
Several times a year there will be curated exhibits, where local artists can display their work. During those times, the box will be locked.
As to the type of art featured, there will be something for everyone. “The idea is for everyone to enjoy it, no matter your age; whether you’re a toddler or a senior and everyone in between,” says Steeper-Doxtator.
The gallery involved several partnerships including the Municipality of Middlesex Centre. Friends of Coldstream Library and members of the Poplar Hill Lions Club. The aim is to enhance the library experience, and compliment nearby features such as the pollinator garden space.
Middlesex Centre Mayor, Aina DeViet, describes it as a “win-win” for the community. “It’s part of community building. People meet new neighbours and friends. Some people who’ve never done anything with art, for example, have an opportunity to learn. They get their kids engaged,” says DeViet.
