AILSA CRAIG – The East Williams Optimist Club welcomed close to 100 residents to the Ailsa Craig Recreation Centre on Sunday, December 7, for its Annual Breakfast with Santa. The event brought families, volunteers, and local youth organizations together and offered a morning focused on community service, holiday spirit, and support for children’s programs in the area.
A hot breakfast was served by the Ailsa Craig Scout Group, whose volunteers worked in rotating shifts to prepare food, serve guests, and maintain the kitchen throughout the morning. Their contribution was highlighted by Optimist member John Stokkermans, who noted, “The Ailsa Craig Scout Group have done a good job cooking and serving.” He also pointed to the strong community response, adding, “We’re pleased with the turnout today, about 100 people attended.”
Optimist member Bob Jones greeted families at the entrance, guided them through the setup, and provided information about both the breakfast and the activities available. Jones emphasized the straightforward, community-driven spirit of the event and noted that many families look forward to this gathering as a holiday tradition. He also explained that children could purchase tickets and choose which prize bags to enter, making the raffle an engaging part of the morning.
The raffle table remained active from the start of the breakfast until the final draws. Stokkermans highlighted, “The event also included a raffle table with 21 prizes donated by Optimist Club members.” Interest remained steady as families browsed the prizes and submitted their entries. The fundraiser plays an important role in supporting youth, and as Stokkermans noted, “Proceeds from the raffle support community youth programs.”
Scout leader Brian Luscombe estimated that around 15 youth and adult volunteers assisted during the event, helping to manage the breakfast and support guests. He said that participating in the Optimist event is a meaningful service opportunity for the Scouts, allowing them to contribute directly to their community. Families interested in joining local Scouting programs can register at myScouts.ca, or contact Luscombe at 519-293-3899 or luscbrian@execulink.com for more information.
Santa Claus, a favourite part of the morning, offered photos and listened to children’s Christmas wishes. Many families saw the visit with Santa as the highlight of their time at the event.
As the holiday season continues, the Optimist Club will shift its focus to upcoming winter activities, including January family skate nights and the annual Family Day three-on-three hockey tournament.
