MIDDLESEX COUNTY - More than 800 investment inquiries and several large-scale development prospects were among the highlights presented to Middlesex County council during a quarterly update on economic development and tourism activity on May 12.
The report was the first performance review connected to the county’s recently adopted 2026-2030 Economic Development and Tourism Strategic Plan, which introduces a stronger focus on measurable results and ongoing tracking of regional economic activity.
Cara Finn, Middlesex County’s Director of Economic Development and Tourism, said the first quarter was largely focused on establishing reporting systems while continuing work related to investment attraction, workforce development and tourism promotion across the region.
During the presentation, Finn said county staff worked alongside regional partners on hundreds of investment-related inquiries and business opportunities in the opening months of 2026. Active discussions included several significant proposals, among them a potential industrial investment connected to Invest Ontario that could bring hundreds of jobs to the region, as well as conversations surrounding a large industrial site and a proposed recreation development.
The county also continued efforts aimed at supporting existing businesses. Staff connected with dozens of local employers during the quarter, assisted expansion-related discussions and helped businesses access government support programs. Workforce availability, planning processes and childcare shortages were identified as recurring concerns raised through those conversations.
Councillor Colin Grantham asked what factors most commonly influence companies when deciding against locating in Middlesex County. Finn explained that decisions vary depending on infrastructure availability, servicing capacity, transportation access and incentives offered elsewhere.
The report also pointed to continued growth in workforce initiatives. Middlesex County secured nearly $47,000 in provincial funding for a Workforce Navigator position, while the Work in Middlesex employment platform recorded more than 24,000 job views during the quarter.
Tourism activity remained active throughout the region as well. County-supported campaigns, partnerships and events generated strong online engagement, while tourism sponsorship funding helped support community initiatives and local events across Middlesex County.
