AILSA CRAIG - Mabel was born and raised in McGillivray Township. She married George McEwen in 1942. He was a farmer who later joined the air force. This meant moving around a lot.
Later they ended up moving back home onto Mabel’s Dad’s farm to raise a family of 3 girls and 1 boy. Mabel is known for her cooking for the thrashers at harvest time. Her homemade pies and biscuits with all the meal fixings were very much enjoyed.
Mabel worked at the very first Ailsa Craig nursing home as a cook. She volunteered driving elderly ladies to shop when they no longer could drive. Mabel would play cards with neighbors and friends, crocheted and quilted many items and she would go dancing at the one room schoolhouse. The cellar shelves were full of homemade canned goods from whatever fruit or vegetable was in season as well as the fish her husband caught. This was a good lunch after a few hands of cards. With the wood stove burning you would always get a very warm welcome at George and Mabel’s home.
