STRATHROY – The Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital (SMGH) unveiled a new Pride crosswalk at the main entrance of their facility on Thursday June 20, symbolizing a commitment to inclusivity. This colourful initiative was a collaborative effort between the SMGH Foundation and the Holy Cross after-school Art program.

The vibrant crosswalk was painted by students under the guidance of Holy Cross Art Teacher, Amber O’Callaghan. Local officials, including Strathroy-Caradoc Mayor Colin Grantham and Deputy Mayor Mike McGuire, attended the unveiling, demonstrating their support for the project.

Ed Wheatley, Chief Operations Officer of the SMGH Foundation, who spearheaded the project, shared the origins of this initiative. “This came out of a suggestion from a community committee at the hospital,” Wheatley explained. “They approached us as we manage the parking lots, and knowing we were already partnering with Holy Cross on a building project, it seemed a perfect match.”

The effort was not without its challenges, notably the summer heat. “The only challenge was the heat. We were here until about 7:30 last night to finish up for this morning’s unveiling,” Wheatley added. Despite the physical discomfort, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. “So far, only positive comments about it,” Wheatley noted, emphasizing the community’s receptiveness to such inclusive gestures.
