Recent news on substance abuse and so-called “safe” supply has been as shocking as it is heartbreaking. Data from the London Police shows that seizures of hydromorphone in London are up 3000%.
According to the President of the London Police Association, it is common knowledge among police officers that safe supply programs are being abused and widely diverted into the community, so that users can use profits from their sales to buy even more addictive and deadly fentanyl. Many of these transactions are targeted towards teenagers, getting them hooked on opioids and leading them into the destructive cycle of addiction.
In the past nine years, there have been 45,000 deaths related to the opioid toxicity crisis in Canada, and the number keeps rising. In 2023, 8,049 Canadians were killed by opioids. This is up 7% in just the last year and up 184% since Justin Trudeau was elected in 2015. In a newly released memo from the NDP-Liberal Government, it has been confirmed that Justin Trudeau now has a plan for a “national decriminalization” program. This means Trudeau wants to legalize hard drugs like crack, meth, and fentanyl, right across the country.
In British Columbia, where the drug legalization experiment began, the province saw a 400% increase in drug overdose deaths, with 2,500 Canadians dying in the first year. As a direct result of the NDP-Liberal hard drug legalization experiment, rampant open drug use is happening in playgrounds, public spaces, and even hospitals. Overdoses have become the leading cause of death for children in BC between the ages of 10 and 18.
It has been reported that Strathroy doctor Janel Gracey has even shut down her addiction clinic because many people struggling with addiction have solely chosen to pursue safe supply drugs on the street, rather than clinics like Gracey’s that provide safeguards and additional supports to bring them out of addiction.
Safe injection sites are clearly not the answer to our drug crisis in Canada. The NDP-Liberal’s legalization of hard drugs has threatened our safe communities and impacted some of our most vulnerable populations, like our youth. That is why a Conservative Government with Pierre Poilievre as prime minister will ban hard drugs and invest in treatment and recovery to bring home loved ones drug-free and ensure the safety of our communities.
