ADELAIDE METCALFE - During the August 12 council meeting, council granted pre-budget approval for the purchase of a new tandem snowplow, marking a crucial step in the township’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve its road infrastructure. The decision follows a report presented by Public Works Manager Coulter Cahill.
Cahill’s report underscored the importance of snowplows in the township’s operations, not only during winter but also throughout the maintenance and construction seasons. The existing fleet operates on a 15-year replacement cycle, and the current Mack snowplow is due for replacement in 2025. However, due to a significant backlog in build spots from heavy truck manufacturers, it now takes up to 14 months from order to delivery. This delay prompted the recommendation for pre-budget approval to ensure the new snowplow would be available by the winter of 2025/2026.
Councillor Garett Kingma inquired whether the township would specify a preference for a Mack snowplow with Viking attachments, given the township’s positive experience with this equipment. Cahill responded that while the procurement process would remain open to various vendors, the tender would specify similar equipment due to its proven reliability in the township’s operations.
The financial impact of the purchase was also addressed. The 2024 capital forecast identified a budget of $416,000 for the replacement of the Mack snowplow, with the funding recommended to come from the lifecycle management reserve fund. Cahill’s report suggested that securing the purchase in September 2024 would align with the township’s asset management plan and ensure the timely arrival of the new snowplow.
The recommendation was moved by Councillor Brodie and seconded by Councillor Kingma. The motion passed unanimously, allowing the township to advance with the procurement process. With the pre-budget approval in place, Adelaide Metcalfe is poised to maintain its road safety and operational efficiency, ensuring that the township is well-prepared for the challenges of the upcoming winter seasons.
