MIDDLESEX CENTRE - Middlesex Centre Ward 1 Councillor Debbie Heffernan has resigned from Council, citing personal reasons. “It was time,” said Heffernan when contacted by the Middlesex Banner. She submitted her written resignation on August 9th, and it took effect August 30th.
Council will receive a staff report at its upcoming September 18th meeting outlining the options for filling the vacancy. These include appointing a qualified elector to the position for the remainder of the 2022-20226 term or holding a byelection.
Heffernan has represented the Ward which takes in Ilderton, since 2018. When asked what she hopes her legacy will be among constituents, Heffernan replied” “A person who was easy to talk to.”
Mayor Aina DeViet commended Heffernan at council’s September 4th meeting.“I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to our departing councillor for her service for the last six years. We will always appreciate your contributions, insights and wish you the very best in the years ahead,” said DeViet.
During her time on council, Heffernan served on the board of the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority and was instrumental in starting the first Middlesex Women’s Leadership Conference in 2023. “Debbie has always been involved in her community and has a history of putting her hand up when volunteers are needed,” said DeViet.
In her remarks, DeViet also cited Heffernan’s involvement with the Ilderton branch of the CIBC. “When the closing of that branch was announced, she was the one who jumped in to ask questions about the closing process and what the impact would be on our residents,” said DeViet.
Although she is stepping down from council, Heffernan says she will continue to “keep an eye on agendas” while spending more time with her family. Heffernan also praised the efforts of Middlesex Centre staff and council. “We’ve had an excellent council and excellent staff and we’ve all worked well together,” said Heffernan.
