SPORTS - Saturday September 14 was the first regular season home game for the North Middlesex Stars and the Lucan Irish hockey teams. The Stars first game was a win over Petrolia, 2-1. They moved into the next weekend for a three-game set, first playing the Exeter Hawks in their hometown Friday night. The Stars lost, 4-2.
Then it was on to Lucan Saturday evening to play the Lucan Irish. The Irish had two games under their belt by then, losing both. These two teams have always put on a good show and played with heart.
Period one seemed to belong to North Middlesex as they had taken three goals just past the halfway mark. But Lucan did not remain down for long, scoring two goals before the end of the period. Tempers flared however, and penalties were garnered on both sides.
On tempers, after the first period, the Stars were marching silently to their change room led by a coaching staff who angrily picked up a bench and threw it down the hallway. Two boys witnessed this event. Coach, is this the kind of example we want to leave them?
In the second period, North Middlesex came out fiercely, scoring two goals within eight minutes. The Irish answered with three of their own to tie the game, but the Stars scored one more before the final buzzer.
Lucan took a while to score and tie the game once again, in period three, which it followed by a second, and third goal, to put Lucan ahead. North Middlesex managed one goal and Lucan, already ahead by one, scored just seconds before the end of the game.
Lucan celebrated its first win at 9-7. The crowd coming to watch could have been larger—only 152 were recorded. Perhaps some more fan encouragement would help these players who put themselves out there.
The Stars won their third game last weekend in Mount Brydges, 4-3.
