Here we are again, embroiled in yet another costly scandal thanks to the Liberal’s corruption and incompetence.
Members of Parliament have been tensely debating the Liberal government’s failure to comply with a House of Commons order to turn over evidence to the police. Something the Speaker of the House has ruled is an absolute privilege that the government has violated. Just as they have violated the trust of the Canadian people time and time again.
This latest scandal comes on the heels of two confidence votes, that the government barely survived, put forward by Conservatives since Parliament returned. Conservatives have made it clear that the Liberals have lost the confidence of the House, and the confidence of Canadians.
The Liberal government’s refusal to hand over key documents related to a $400 million “green slush fund” is yet another sign of their deeply rooted corruption and lack of transparency.
The Auditor General has highlighted in a recent report that $390 million from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) was directed to Liberal party insiders, involving 186 conflicts of interest. Despite these findings, Justin Trudeau’s ministers, including Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne, repeatedly failed to act.
Conservatives have been demanding the documents be handed over to the RCMP, but the Liberal government has resisted, arguing that releasing the documents could threaten Canadians’ Charter rights—a claim that is both overblown and disingenuous.
By refusing to cooperate, the Liberals are attempting to bury this scandal, just as they have in previous cases, such as with the Winnipeg Virology Lab. An issue that put Canadians at risk from dangerous substances being made vulnerable to hostile foreign agents.
Parliamentarians’ right to demand documents is a long-standing privilege, and the government’s refusal undermines the very foundations of accountability in our democracy. Only Common-Sense Conservatives are committed to ending this corruption and ensuring the government answers for its actions.
The Speaker’s ruling confirmed that the government has violated parliamentary privilege by withholding documents, and leaves Conservatives with no choice but to continue pushing for transparency. Despite their attempts to dodge accountability, the Liberal government faces increasing pressure from Canadians who value democracy and who are determined to uncover the truth behind the SDTC “green slush fund.”
An election may be the only way to clear the air and restore integrity to government. Canadians deserve answers, and only through the new leadership of a Conservative government, can trust be restored in our political system.
