As Mayor of Southwest Middlesex, I am thrilled to share some notable developments in our community over the past year. We have made strides in infrastructure, economic growth, and recreation, all aimed at enhancing residents’ quality of life and creating a more vibrant, thriving community for everyone.
Our investment in essential infrastructure projects has been a top priority. The Glencoe Sanitary Forcemain and Victoria Street Pump Station improvement project will enhance our sanitary systems, supporting our growing community by improving wastewater handling and directly benefiting approximately 2,500 homes while increasing capacity for future residential growth. We are also replacing multiple road culverts, completing sidewalk replacements to enhance walkability, and making targeted roadway improvements for safer travel. These upgrades are critical to maintaining high standards in our infrastructure, and they are investments in our community’s future.
Drainage infrastructure remains a priority. Ongoing maintenance of municipal drains ensures effective water management, plans to improve to Glencoe Outlet Drain are underway and will help manage water more efficiently during significant rain events. This work is essential for supporting our community and protecting properties from water-related issues, especially as we plan for future growth, and climate change.
On the economic development front, we’re excited about several new residential developments. With planned growth, we anticipate 947 new housing units over the next eight years. This expansion speaks to our community’s attractiveness and the demand for housing in a vibrant, growing area like ours. Southwest Middlesex is also becoming a hub for agricultural innovation, thanks to the recent opening of Ontario Plants Propagation Limited in Glencoe. This $75 million investment includes a 13-acre greenhouse and represents the first phase of a four-phase project. Each phase is expected to generate 40 to 50 new jobs, bolstering economic growth in our region and supporting our community’s agricultural roots. Ontario Plants is aligned with Dalsem Group who are world leaders in greenhouse technology and superior propagation of highly demanded plant stock to the growers of North America. Combined – they dominate the industry.
One of our proudest achievements this year has been the grand opening of Little Kin Park in Wardsville. As the first park in Southwest Middlesex that is both inclusive and accessible, it offers a welcoming space for residents of all ages. Little Kin Park has quickly become a community favorite, with visitors already enjoying its offerings and the beautiful new play areas.
Simpson Park in Glencoe has also been transformed with new pickleball courts, accessible washrooms, and a walking path. Pickleball is growing in popularity, offering a fun and active way for people of all ages to engage with one another. The improved facilities at Simpson Park ensure that everyone, including those with mobility challenges, can enjoy this wonderful public space and connect with others in the community. It is my hope that additional improvements will be forthcoming in the 2025 budget.
To meet the needs of our growing community, we have welcomed new staff to maintain the high standards of service our residents expect. We are pleased to have Amanda Gubbels as our new Chief Administrative Officer, offering her leadership as we navigate this period of growth. Amanda is available at the municipal office to answer questions or address any concerns you may have, underscoring our commitment to being accessible and responsive. We have assembled a fine Team under the direction of our CAO, and the hiring committees of Council.
The progress we’ve made in 2024 reflects our dedication to fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and resilient community. Looking forward, we remain committed to building on these achievements, enhancing quality of life, and ensuring that Southwest Middlesex continues to thrive.
Thank you to our residents for your support and enthusiasm for these projects. Together, we are building a stronger and more connected Southwest Middlesex.
On behalf of Council, Administration, and staff, I thank The Banner for their interest in Southwest Middlesex.
