MIDDLESEX CENTRE - Middlesex Centre council has appointed local businessperson Jean Coles to sit as Ward 1 councillor. Coles fills the seat left vacant by the resignation of Debbie Heffernan at the end of August.
In a statement, Coles says: “It’s an incredible privilege to serve our community, and I am eager to work alongside each of you to make Ward 1 an even better place to live, work, and grow.”
Coles placed second in the most recent municipal election, gathering 494 votes to Heffernan’s 615. Ward 1 is comprised of communities that include Ilderton, Birr and Denfield.
Coles holds an MBA from Norwich University, owns several Sport Clips Haircut franchises, and is a part-time professor at Fanshawe College’s Lawrence Kinlin School of Business. Coles has also been active in a number of community organizations including the Ilderton and Area Business Association and the Optimist Club of Ilderton.
The appointment of Coles follows a presentation to council at a previous meeting outlining the possible ways to fill the vacancy. This included having a byelection, which was cited as the most expensive option.
“I look forward to connecting with residents, local businesses, and community groups to hear your thoughts and ideas for how we can foster a vibrant and inclusive community. My door is always open and I encourage you to reach out with any questions or concerns,” says Coles.
Coles will take the oath of office at the November 20th council meeting. At that time, she will officially be sworn in as Ward 1 councillor.
