MIDDLESEX COUNTY - Trevor Redmond is a man on a mission: to encourage Canadians to become more physically active. And he’s making his point by running across Canada.
Known affectionately as ‘The Fellow in Yellow’ Redmond began his cross-country trek March 26th in Halifax. He ran through Middlesex County the week of November 18th, with overnight stops in Strathroy and Delaware.
Redmond embarked on the run to stress the link between staying active and good health. It’s something the 53-year-old is passionate about, having recovered from a serious accident when he was a teenager. “I got struck by a car when I was 15-years-old and I was at risk of losing my leg,” recounts Redmond. “The best they were hoping for was for me to be using a cane for the rest of my life. But what I realized… was that we heal when we move. So as soon as we can get up and, on our feet, and moving, the better off we are health-wise,” adds Redmond.
Redmond is running solo, with the help of a small team of volunteers who reach out remotely to help line up accommodation along the way.
As the winter months approach, Redmond vows to continue his run despite the cold weather. He’s making the appropriate preparations, and will also be relying on his outdoor experience, having exercised in bitterly cold weather when he lived in Calgary.
Redmond is hoping the run will take him all the way to Victoria, British Columbia. Along the way, he’ll be sharing a message of determination. “Climb a few hills, take a few mountains. Explore,” encourages Redmond.
