SPORTS - As Junior C hockey ramps up for the second half of regular season play, the two northern teams in Middlesex County may be struggling. But there is still time.
In Saturday and Sunday games just before Christmas, Lucan lost to North Middlesex but won against Mount Brydges. They have played one game in 2025 so far, that January 4 against Petrolia. A home game for the Lucan Irish, it was hoped numbers in the audience would rise.
No scoring in the first period, but infractions were abundant for both teams. In the second period, Petrolia scored the first two goals, both were power play zingers. Lucan got on the board and then the teams scored one each.
Period three saw Petrolia score twice more, followed by three from the Irish team to tie the game and go into OT. In less than six minutes the visitors scored, making it a 6-5 win for them.
After their win against Lucan, the North Middlesex Stars played two games after Christmas. In December they lost to Port Staley but won against Aylmer. Both were away games for the Stars.
A Thursday game, January 2, was played against Petrolia in their arena. Petrolia gained two goals in each of the first two periods, as North Middlesex struggled to get one. In the third, the Stars got another goal but not enough, as the home team got 3 and ended the game a 7-2 loss for North Middlesex.
Saturday January 4th the Stars were matched up with Exeter in the North Middlesex arena. Exeter scored twice in each of periods one and three, and once in period two. The Stars scored once in period two and saw the visitors leave as 5-1 victors.
The next day, North Middlesex went to Mount Brydges to play the Bulldogs. The Stars were first to score, but the Bulldogs made two goals before the period one buzzer. Period two saw the visitors taking a beating as Mount Brydges scored four times to North Middlesex’ one goal. In the third, no scoring was seen until the Bulldogs had a power play hit at 16:56. The Stars lose 7-2.
