LUCAN – The Lucan Library continues to thrive as a vibrant community hub, offering a range of activities for people of all ages. Leigh Robinson, Supervisor of Lucan Library, emphasizes the importance of creating a welcoming space: “We want the library to be a place where people feel comfortable spending time, not just coming in to grab books and leave.”
The library’s programs cater to diverse interests. Popular recurring activities include the Tuesday Stitching Group, where needle crafters gather to work on projects and chat over coffee, and the Pro-Craft-Inators adult crafting class on Thursdays, which consistently fills its six available spots. For children and families, weekly Story Time and an after-school program featuring crafts provide engaging options.
Among the standout offerings is Unsolved – the True Crime Podcast Club. Held on the last Thursday of each month, this program invites participants to listen to a selected podcast episode about an unsolved crime, and then join a lively discussion to explore theories and ideas. “The conversations are so engaging we’ve extended the session from an hour to an hour and a half,” Leigh notes.
Another unique initiative is the library’s music program, featuring a local musician who performs rock, country, and folk music. The casual atmosphere often leads to sing-alongs, making it a fun and interactive experience. While attendance is currently growing, Robinson encourages more people to join, promising an entertaining time.
For movie enthusiasts, the library hosts monthly screenings, with January’s feature being “Calendar Girls”. There’s also a Mental Wellness Collection with resources for young adults and adults, including workbooks that patrons can use privately with accompanying copies for home completion.
The library is particularly proud of its themed “grab-and-go” bags. These curated collections include books, activity sheets, and coloring pages on topics like dinosaurs, making it easy for busy patrons to enjoy library resources at home. Additionally, puzzles and board games are available to promote family time and collaboration.
Beyond programs, the Lucan Library provides practical services like microfilm archives dating back to the 1800s, a VHS-to-digital converter, and local history references. These offerings are complemented by cozy reading nooks, ensuring the library remains a space for relaxation and learning.
Leigh encourages community members to participate in these enriching activities: “Our programs are free and open to everyone. Whether you’re here for a craft, a movie, or just a quiet corner to read, there’s something for everyone at the Lucan Library.”
